When I talk about fitness, I am not only talking about muscle, body fat, or body shape. I am also talking about change: how it starts, how it continues, how to measure it, and how it gives a person a sense of control.
When I was 38, I lowered my body fat rate from 28% to 11%. I did not start with a noble reason. I wanted to look better and be more attractive. This may sound a little vain, but it was real. Many changes begin with a small and honest wish.
I started building this habit on September 28, 2024. It was not New Year's Day, not the start of a month, not even a Monday. Just a normal day, and a normal day was enough. That was my first lesson: a real beginning does not need a ceremony. Many people say, "I will start next year, or next month." Often that is just another form of delay. Perfectionism is often just a nicer name for procrastination.
The second lesson: starting is not the hardest part. The hard part is showing up again the next day. Motivation can take me into the gym once, but it cannot keep me there. I used to think consistency came from willpower, but willpower is not stable. If I ask myself every morning, "Should I go today?", the habit soon becomes tiring.
So I built a system instead. I made a workout plan, so I never had to decide what to train. I trained in the morning, because morning is the most controllable part of the day. I chose the nearest gym, because more than ten minutes of travel can be the difference between going and not going. Each choice replaced something unstable with something I could control. Together they form one loop: planning reduces decisions, environment reduces friction, and feedback gives motivation.
Feedback was the last piece of that loop. When I saw my shoulders getting wider and my waistline showing, I knew it was working; the trend lines in Apple Health agreed. The data was not the goal, but it made the change visible. The more change I saw, the more I wanted to continue.
But feedback only works if I am watching the right number. In fitness, the most common number is body weight. Many people, including me, believed losing fat means making the scale go down. But my body fat rate dropped a lot while my weight stayed almost the same — I had lost fat and gained muscle. So the real question is not "Am I lighter?" but "What metric am I optimizing?" The same is true in life: sometimes we think we are pursuing progress, when we are only chasing a number that is easy to measure.
So when I talk about fitness, yes, I am talking about muscle, body fat, and body shape. These are real results. But the most important result is not visible in the mirror. Fitness taught me that a beginning needs no ceremony, and that a system beats willpower. It taught me to watch the right metric, not just the easy one. Above all, it let me confirm one thing: at an age when life keeps pushing me toward losing control, I can still take control of something.
